Strategic Focus Map
Make strategic focus visible by connecting a small number of strategic themes to capacity, time horizon, and real trade-offs. The map helps a group see what fits now, what belongs next or later, and what must move when something new enters.
How to Use It
Define three to five strategic focus areas. Make the available capacity explicit, including any reserve for unplanned work. Place candidate investments into Now, Next, or Later based on strategic fit, relative importance, capacity, and uncertainty. Keep Now deliberately constrained. When something new enters, identify what it displaces rather than silently expanding the plan. Capture the rationale for important placement and displacement decisions.
Questions to Explore
What are the few strategic areas that deserve protected capacity?
How much capacity are we intentionally investing in each area?
What genuinely belongs in Now?
What should move to Next or Later?
If this moves into Now, what moves out?
What capacity should remain uncommitted for uncertainty or unplanned work?
Variations
Use the map with physical cards or sticky notes in person, or with movable digital objects in a shared workspace. For a faster conversation, start with existing initiatives and focus only on Now versus Not Now. For deeper portfolio work, add relative-size investment cards and explicit capacity targets by strategic focus area.
Using It Responsibly
Use the map as a working decision surface, not as a promise that everything shown will be delivered. Revisit it when strategy, capacity, evidence, or demand changes. Preserve the core mechanics: a small number of focus areas, constrained Now, visible capacity, explicit displacement, and room for uncertainty.
